The Drake party Drake didn't go to
Last week in NYC, a Drake superfan threw an unofficial album-listening party at SOB's. About 600 tickets sold. Packed till 4 in the morning. Neither Drake nor anyone from his team was there. Same room Drake played his first NYC show in over a decade ago. The fan who ran it now operates the same brand in six cities and is rolling Paris out next.
That's the future hiding in plain sight.
Fan-led culture is its own business class now. Not consumption. Operation. Real distribution, real audiences, real economics, and none of it routed through the artist or the label.
The line that hit me, from Rory Farrell in this Forbes piece: "those communities don't turn off anymore."
That's the whole shift in one sentence. Persistent online presence creates persistent in-real-life demand. The base isn't an audience. It's an organism.
The Future Of Digital Assets Might Look More Like A Drake Party · Read on Forbes
Now most of you reading this aren't throwing Drake parties. So translate it down. Same muscle, smaller scale. If you're a DJ with 800 followers, the work is showing up for the eight people who keep showing up for you. Repeatedly. With intent. The Drake fan didn't start at SOB's. He started somewhere way smaller, and never quit on his people.
This whole shift, fans treating fandom as identity, building infrastructure for each other, outrunning the label's marketing budget by just caring more, this is exactly why I built Building Your Base. The whole program is $27. Twenty-seven dollars. If any of this is making you nod, it's already paid for itself before you finish it.
One more thing while we're here.
I keep coming back to this Reel from TOA5T. He doubled his music income in six months. Not from Spotify. From Pandora and SiriusXM. 100k monthly listeners on Pandora versus 72k on Spotify after eight years on it. He did it by burning EPs to CDs and mailing them to college radio stations with handwritten notes.

The point isn't the CDs. The point is that there is way more to your music than streaming. Non-interactive royalty income (radio rotation, Pandora, SiriusXM, BMI/ASCAP publishing) is real money that most producers completely ignore because Spotify is the only thing they look at. Your music career is a long journey. Getting savvy about the business side of it is part of the job.
By the way, I don't know if you're following me on Instagram. I'm always trying to drop wisdom over there as best I can, so hopefully there's some value. Follow me here if you're not.
Hit reply, I am always reading.
Nice one.
