Your follower count is lying to you
Instagram in 2026 barely resembles what it was 18 months ago.
I went deep on a breakdown from the ManyChat team this week. They run automation for millions of accounts, so they're not guessing at what works. They're watching it happen live.
Most of it confirmed what I already feel in my bones. One part stopped me cold.
There's a creator with over two million followers. She wanted to launch a clothing line. To keep it alive she had to sell thirty six shirts.
Thirty six. Out of two million.
She never hit it.
Read that again. Two million people, and not enough trust in the room to move thirty six shirts.
Followers and trust are not the same thing. They never were. 2026 is just the year the gap got impossible to hide.

So what do you actually do about it.
A few things from the breakdown that map straight onto what I see from the label side every week.
Stop opening with "three ways to..."
That hook is done. Overused, and now any AI can spit out a hundred of them before breakfast. The feed is drowning in identical tips. What still works is a story only you can tell. "I used to stand in the back corner of every room" pulls people in. "Three ways to improve your confidence" makes them scroll. Same advice. Different door in. Lead with the thing that happened to you, then teach.
Going viral to the wrong room is worse than not going viral.
Hop on a trend outside your lane and you pull in followers who came for the trend, not for you. They sit there as dead weight, or they leave. A producer with 800 real ones beats a producer with 8,000 tourists every time. If it's not a hell yes, skip it.
Use trial reels.
Costs you nothing, and most of you still aren't touching it. Post a reel as a trial and it only goes to non-followers. Your own people never see it. It flops, nobody knows. It lands, you push it to your feed. It's a testing lab for that perfectionist brain that keeps killing good ideas in your drafts. Stop agonising. Start testing.
None of this is about chasing a bigger number. It's about building something a smaller number actually trusts.
That's the whole thing I keep banging on about, and it's exactly why I built Building Your Base. The entire program is $27. If any of this is making you nod, it has already paid for itself.
And if we're not connected over on Instagram yet, that's where I'm trying to drop this kind of thing as often as I can. Follow me here.
Hit reply and tell me your real follower count. Not the vanity one. The number of people who'd actually buy the shirt. I read every one.
Nice one.
